About

Digital and Lifelong Learning and ITS Educational Technologies have conducted a pilot of the Canvas Learning Management System. A diverse cohort of undergraduate and graduate courses during the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters were selected to assess Canvas’s value as a possible replacement for Sakai.

Participating faculty, teaching assistants, and instructional support staff received technical training and support to build their courses in Canvas. All users received the same level of support as they do with Sakai.

Canvas by Instructure is used by more institutions of higher education than any other learning management system, including other UNC System schools and UNC-CH’s peer institutions. Canvas is easy to use and offers improved calendar services, a smartphone app, robust email and app notifications, and a more intuitive interface for designing courses. Additionally, Canvas’s cloud architecture requires little to no downtime for feature upgrades and system maintenance.

Timeline

All Fall 2022 Registrar courses are now available in Canvas! Instructors may choose to teach their FA22 courses in either Canvas or Sakai. See these 5 Quick Steps to Set Up a Course in Canvas. Requests for non-Registrar courses in Canvas will be accepted after July 15. The University’s Canvas license is limited to courses with instructional purposes only, such as non-credit training.
